March 14 is one of our favorite days of the year when we celebrate the amazing mathematical concept of Pi!
Two problems are attached below. If you use any, let me know! These are from NCTM Pi Day Resources.

These tasks are great activities for exploring the relationship that exists inside all circles.

Have a wonderful math holiday!

Task 1 - Archer
LeBron practices archery in his off-season. One day, he wanted to know if he had a better chance of hitting the white or the red part of the target.
1. What are the probabilities of hitting each color?
2. What is the probability of hitting a bull's-eye?
The target is made from concentric circles forming rings of alternating colors. The bull's-eye is red. It has an overall diameter of 18 inches. Starting from the outside edge, each circle decreases in radius by two inches.
You can assume that LeBron’s shots all hit the target (much like his basketball shots) but are randomly distributed within the target area.

Task 2 - Making Pie Crust
This weekend you plan to prepare a pie for a Pi Day family gathering, so you head to the store for a pie pan and some ingredients to make the pie shell.
A normal pie shell is a circle that is 9 inches in diameter.
Unfortunately, the store only carried 11-inch pie pans, so you will need to adjust your recipe to fit in the pan.

1. Here are two recipes for 9" pie crusts. How would you change them so that there will be enough crust to fill the 11" pan?
(You can assume that the pans are just flat circles since you basically make a circle of dough and then lay it over the pan. You can round a little bit, but don't round too much!)

Answer Checks:

Archer – The probability of hitting the red is about 60.5%. The probability of hitting the white is about 39.5%. The probability of hitting the bullseye is 1.2%.

Making Pie Crusts: Multiply each of the ingredients in the recipe for the 9" pan by 1.5 to find the correct amount for the 11" pan.
The English recipe will look something like this:
• 1.5 cups flour
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 3-4.5 tablespoons of ice water
For the metric one:
• 375 grams flour
• 7.5 grams salt
• 300 grams butter
• 1.5 deciliters of ice water
